At the close of the Civil War, the American South sought to rebuild
its identity and its economy; and perhaps no undertaking was more
vital to both than the Chisholm Trail. Belton provided a vital
stop on the bold, courageous push from South Texas to Abilene,
Kansas. Named for Jesse Chisholm, who had established a trade route
north from Texas, the Chisholm Trail saw as many as 1,000 head
of cattle at a stretch thundering toward market in Kansas. Learn
more about this astounding piece of Texas history right here in
Belton.
