- Theatre and Concerts: Nacogdoches boasts
an active fine arts community through Stephen F. Austin State
University and the local Lamp Lite Theatre.
- Annual Azalea Trail: Nacogdoches springs
to life in March with an onset of dogwoods and azaleas. The SFA
Mast Arboretum and Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden are
breathtaking this time of year. As the largest azalea garden
in Texas, the Mize Garden boasts one of the most diverse azalea
collections in the United States.
- Historical Attractions and Museums: Numerous
historic homes and museums take visitors back in time to the
early days of Nacogdoches. Millard's Crossing Historic
Village,
a charming reconstructed 19th century community, the Sterne
Hoya House, Durst-Taylor Historic House and Gardens,
the Old Stone Fort and the Old University Building.
- Nature Trails: The Lanana Creek Trail, originally
an Indian footpath, begins at Liberty Hall on East Main Street.
The SFA Interpretive Trail offers two trails spanning
three miles that take visitors into some of the most dynamic
and scenic areas of the Angelina National
Forest. Some 150
species of birds and 80 species of butterflies call the forest
home.
- Freedom Fest: Grab your blankets and
lawn chairs then mosey downtown for an old-fashioned, community-wide
Fourth-of-July celebration. The evening culminates in a dazzling,
patriotic fireworks display.
Antiques and Shopping: Like
no other place in Texas, countless family-owned shops and restaurants
still do business the old-fashioned way. Unique shops, boutiques
and antique stores line the red brick streets downtown.
- Lake Nacogdoches: Located on Loco Bayou,
10 miles west of Nacogdoches, this scenic 2,200-acre lake offers
a great place to picnic, swim, or catch largemouth bass, crappie
and sunfish.
- Nine Flags Festival: Each holiday season,
historic downtown transforms into a winter wonderland with more
than 3 million holiday lights, a sparkling fireworks display
and the largest lighted Christmas parade in East Texas.
- Historic
Town Center/Visitors' Center: Start
your visit to the Oldest Town in Texas at the Historic Town
Center/Visitors' Center, located on the square in historic
downtown. Built in 1917 as the city's post office, the
Visitors' Center is open seven days a week. Here you
can view exhibits of early Nacogdoches and pick up literature
on things to see and do in the oldest town in Texas.
- Downtown Walking Tour or Audio Driving Tour:
Walk in the footsteps of history along a self-guided walking
tour that includes 15 historic landmarks in the downtown area.
