Stagecoach Inn
401 S Stagecoach Rd
Phone: 1-800-732-8994 or 254-947-5111
It is one of 23 buildings in the village with a Texas Historical
marker and one of 18 listed on the National Register of Historic
Places, which notes it to be the oldest structure in Salado. In
1852, two years after the first permanent settler arrived and nearly
seven years before Salado was officially founded, a stage line
was established from Austin to Waco, with a mail and passenger
stop in the village. The Shady Villa Hotel opened its doors to
serve those stage travelers and later, cowboys pushing cattle north
along a branch of the Chisholm Trail. The entrance to the old Inn
is graced by a magnificent, 500 year old burr oak tree. If the
tree could talk, it would tell tales of some of the Inn's most
famous guests, including General George Armstrong Custer, Confederate
General Robert E. Lee, Texas patriot Sam House, cattle baron Shanghai
Pierce and such infamous outlaws as the James brothers and Sam
Bass.
