The statue that gave a river and the city its name... "wee-chi-tah"

In the 1880's, on the frontier of the Wichita River, the town of Wichita Falls emerged, named after the Indian word "Wee-Chi-Tah" and a small waterfall.

After a dozen years of hard work and dedication, this legend has been commemorated with a multi-part statue standing on the banks of the 'waist deep' Wichita River for all visitors to enjoy. Sculptor Jack Steven's creation is a life-sized replica of a Comanche woman and her companions as she tested the river's depth... and gave a river and city its name... "wee-chi-tah".

The 54-foot man-made waterfall was completed in 1986 and replaced the original falls that washed away more than 100 years ago. Visitors enjoy miles of landscaped, lighted, all-weather walking trails lined with benches, and beautiful Lucy Park.

Wichita Falls has over 2,000 affordable hotel/motel rooms and a diverse community offering its visitors a multi-cultural experience not found in many West Texas cities. Performing arts enthusiast will be delighted with our notable symphony, renowned ballet, charming dinner theatre, and Branson-style live entertainment in the historic Wichita Theatre Opera House.

Antique shopping at its finest can be found in the Depot Square Historic District, and a visit to the Wichita Falls Winery and Vineyard will be a delightful "wine tasting" experience for all levels of wine connoisseurs.

Sports fans can indulge in a junior league hockey game, or perhaps enjoy a round of golf at one of the beautiful and challenging golf courses in town.

Rich in heritage from cowboys and Indians to the railroad and the oil boon, the frontier tradition lives on. Plan your visit to Wichita Falls, Texas... the "Total Package" of entertainment & events. You'll be glad you did.
